Meet Brendan Corbett

Early Life

I was born at St. Vincent Hospital in Los Angeles, the younger of two children in a family proud of its Irish immigrant heritage.
My early years were spent near Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue. At age three, following my mother’s passing from breast cancer, my father, brother, and I moved to Whittier to live with family.

I attended St. Mary’s Catholic School through eighth grade
and graduated from Whittier High School. While studying at
Rio Hondo Community College, I worked delivering auto parts for Whittier Auto Supply. In my early twenties, I was employed as a Teamster, working as a warehouseman and delivery driver.

Inspired by my father’s lifelong public service from the Army Corps of Engineers in WWII to careers with the Orange County Probation Office, California Department of Parole, and California Youth Authority, I pursued a path in law enforcement. In 1985,I joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department as a member of Academy Class 228.

Restoring Community Safety

• Restructure the department to focus all available resources into patrol and line functions.

• Increase the Reserve program to 1000 strong within the first year. This almost immediate impact will provide resources into the community and provide a relief factor for the overworked and depleted deputy ranks.

• Implement my custody release plan, which will enhance the effectiveness of existing county programs
(ODR, ATI, JCOD, etc. ) and incorporate the District Attorney, Courts, and Police Departments to reduce homelessness and recidivism.

• Implement technology to enhance response times and improve community and deputy safety.

Accountable Leadership

Increase community safety by restoring the presence of deputy personnel on the front lines with a department restructure and a robust recruiting and retention program, using a team of proven experts.
This will include restoring the Reserve program to effective levels:

• The Reserves were previously over 1,000 and have been depleted to approximately 400. I will restore this to 1,000 in the first year.  These men and women come directly from the communities we serve and volunteer their time to serve.
Their presence on the front lines will have an almost immediate impact.

• I will implement a staged background process for Professional staff to allow an expedited hiring process and not continue to lose qualified people to a process that takes close to a year. Professional staff are at a 25% vacancy rate!

• As previously mentioned, I have an improved Custody release plan, which will put those with mental illness or substance abuse on a path to wellness while in our custody and care. and upon their release, collaborate with the existing County Agencies for a smooth and effective transition into community programs.  I will include the District Attorney, Courts, and local Police Departments on a network, allowing all of these to work collectively for enhancing public safety by reducing homelessness and recidivism.
